Pit search engines against each other

August 12, 2009

via: http://news.cnet.com/8301-19882_3-10307904-250.html

A clever hack that puts old Google and new Google results side by side, so you can use both: CompareGoogle. Useful? Not really. But kind of entertaining if you’re a search geek.

I prefer, though, the blind taste test of search, BlindSearch, created by Microsoft employee Michael Kordahi. You enter your query and it gives you three panes of search results, from Google, Bing, and Yahoo, but in a random order and with nothing telling you which is which. You find out what’s what once you tell it which result set you like best. How scientific. I ran it several times and found Google to be my preferred engine, although Bing was close behind. (Thanks, SFGate.)

Tell BlindSearch which results you like and then it will tell you where they came from. (Screenshot edited: ads removed.)

(Credit: Screenshot by Rafe Needleman/CNET)

Other side-by-side search mashups include YahoogleSearch (Google vs. Yahoo); Twingine (also Google vs. Yahoo); Bing-vs-Google (guess); Blackdog’s Google-Bing (Google vs. Bing in multiple languages); and BingTweets (Bing plus Twitter Search);

There are also several services that grab results from multiple engines in the background and present them in one collated list. Examples include Dogpile, which I used to use when Google didn’t give me what I wanted, and Clusty. See also our overview of metasearch engines.

Problems with PDFs

July 31, 2009

VIA: http://www.monstersandcritics.com/tech/features/article_1478846.php/Problems_with_PDFs

Washington – Adobe’s portable document format (PDF) is everywhere these days – and it’s easy to see why. PDF files are secure. They also allow publishers to distribute documents with complex formatting retained, and, thanks to the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, they can be viewed by just about anyone on any platform. But what if you’d like to do more with PDF files – such as converting them into text, or creating them yourself? That’s when most questions arise. Read on for some answers.

Q: How can I turn a PDF into editable text?

A: There are a few ways. First, you can scan the document and then use an application to turn the scanned document into editable text. To do this, you’ll need two tools: a scanner and an optical character recognition (OCR) package. Most people have a scanner these days. If you don’t, you can find good flatbed scanners for as little as 25 dollars.

As for an OCR package, you might already have one without knowing it. If you have Microsoft Office installed on your PC, you also have an application called Microsoft Office Document Imaging, which can do everything from scanning a printed document to performing optical character recognition and sending the result to Word. MS Document Imaging probably won’t be as accurate or preserve as much formatting as a heavy-duty commercial OCR package such as OmniPage, but it will do the trick in many situations.

Another option is to procure or purchase a full version of Adobe Acrobat or Nitro PDF Professional, which would allow you to open a PDF and save it as a text file, assuming the PDF has not been password-protected. Both Acrobat Pro and Nitro PDF are available in trial versions

.

Finally, for low volume work, you might try one of the free online services, such as PDFtoWord (http://www.pdftoword.com), that will convert your PDF and e-mail you the results of the conversion. PDFtoWord does an impressive job of converting PDFs with most formatting intact.

Note that one of the reasons that the PDF format has gained such traction is that it allows companies and individuals to secure the content of the document by password-protecting the PDFs. Be sure not to redistribute protected documents that you’ve converted from PDFs.

Q: Is there a way to turn a document into a PDF without buying Acrobat Pro?

A: Yes. If you do not want to purchase any software at all, you could turn to one of the free online services that will convert a document into PDF and send you the results by e-mail. PDF Online (http://www.pdfonline.com/convert-pdf) is one such service. This approach is suitable for one-off or low-volume work.

For higher volume work, check out the free Doc to PDF Universal Document Converter (http://www.doc-pdf.com), which is essentially a printer driver. Once installed, just open the document you’d like to convert, and from your application’s File menu, select Print. In the resulting Print dialog box, select Universal Document Converter as the printer, and then click the Properties button. From the Properties panel, select Document to PDF as the profile type, and click OK. Files are saved to the folder ‘c:udc output files’ by default.

Q: Adobe reader just seems to get larger and slower. Is there any way I can get older versions of the Reader?

A: Sure. Check in at OldVersion.com (http://www.oldversion.com/Acrobat-Reader.html), and you’ll find virtually every version of Adobe Reader since 1.0.

The problem you might run into by downloading very old versions of Adobe Reader, however, is that they may not support some of the features of PDF documents that you find today on the Internet

. So instead of using an older version, you may want to opt for a replacement. Foxit Reader (http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader) is free and compatible with most PDF documents in existence today.

Foxit’s claim to fame is that it’s ‘small’ and ‘fast,’ which will be music to the ears of those who want nothing more from a PDF reader than to read PDF documents – and quickly.

With Foxit installed, you’ll probably be able to open PDF files you find on the Internet almost as quickly as you open a standard Web page. You can’t ask for much more than that.

Q: I installed Adobe Acrobat on my computer, and now I have Acrobat toolbar buttons in most of my applications, such as Word and Outlook. My applications also load slower than before I installed Acrobat. How can I get rid of these buttons?

A: There’s really only one way to remove these toolbars permanently. You can go to the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel, find the Adobe installation, select it, and click Remove/Change. You’ll want to ‘change’ the installation, and in the process remove the Create Adobe PDF options for the applications where you do not wish to see the toolbar buttons. Specifically, in the Change dialog box, you should expand the Create Adobe PDF menu and change the status of the appropriate application to ‘This feature will not be available.’

Note that doing this will not affect your ability to print to PDF using the PDF printer driver. In other words, you’ll still be able to create PDFs with your applications; you’ll just need to select PDF as the printing format from the Print dialog box.

NASSCOM today announced the findings of its annual survey on the performance of the Indian IT-BPO services sector for FY08-09 and outlook for FY09-10. According to the findings, the sector reached USD 58.8 billion in FY08-09 up from USD 52 billion in FY07-08. Export revenues for the Indian IT-BPO industry recorded growth of 16.3 percent and clocked revenues of USD 46.3 billion in FY08-09 up from USD 40.4 billion in FY07-08. The domestic segment grew by 21% to register revenues of INR 570 billion in FY08-09 from INR 470 billion in FY07-08.

Within the export segment, IT services have grown by 14.7% to clock revenues of USD 26.5 billion; BPO exports are up by 16.5% registering revenues of USD 12.7 billion. Engineering services and product exports clocked revenues of USD 7.1 billion, growing at 11% in FY 08 -09.

Mr. Pramod Bhasin, Chairman, NASSCOM said, “While growth was synonymous with industry performance in the past decade, resilience and efficiency was the thrust in the year 2008-09. In the face of a severe economic downturn in key markets, the industry was able to deliver a high growth of over 16 percent and retain its position as a strategic global sourcing destination. The industry also enhanced its thrust on building a globalised value chain, with a 35 percent increase in global delivery centers since 2007”.

Mr. Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM said, “A significant highlight of the year was the industry thrust to re-engineer itself to partner with its clients in testing times. Increase in fixed price contract, shift from onsite to offshore and end-to-end transformational deals helped the industry to get over 90 percent repeat business from its clients. At the same time, the thrust on diversification saw emerging verticals and geographies grow almost three times than the core markets”.
The domestic market witnessed enhanced focus in FY 08-09, with large transformational deals in telecom and e-governance and contract value of outsourcing deals growing by 32%. Domestic BPO got a special boost with over 40 percent growth in this period.

FY 09-10 trends/estimates

  • FY09-10 Export revenue projected to grow at ~4-7% to reach ~USD 48-50 billion
  • Domestic IT-BPO market to reach ~INR 650-670 billion growing at ~ 15 – 18 %
  • Core markets, North America and BFSI started to stabilize
  • Decision making starting to happen – but buyers remain cautious; large deals missing
  • Analysts continue to downgrade IT spending for 2009
  • Q1 result of FY 09-10 demonstrate sustained focus with growth in operating margins and high utilization

  • Q1 result of FY 09-10 demonstrate sustained focus with growth in operating margins and high utilization

The last few weeks have witnessed some stabilization in the demand environment with improvements in GDP growth rates, stock indices upswing that could indicate early signs of recovery. However, worldwide IT spending growth is expected to decline in 2009 and 2010. The environment continues to be challenging with global demand ecosystem being weak; absence of large deals; vendor consolidation and pricing pressures.

“The industry in its first quarter results has demonstrated sustained focus with increased operating margins and enhanced utilization. The NASSCOM survey estimates that the IT-BPO export revenues will grow by ~ 4-7% to reach ~ USD 48-50 billion in FY09-10.” said Mr. Bhasin. IT-BPO Domestic revenues are expected to grow by 15-18%, to reach INR 650-670 billion.

Global sourcing is today an essential component for organizational competitiveness. The industry in India will continue to invest in offering transformational solutions and enhance its value proposition in sync with client requirements.

As a part of the survey, NASSCOM also released the annual rankings for the following categories, for FY08-09

  1. Top 20 IT Software and Service exporters in India (excluding BPO revenues)
  2. Top 15 BPO rankings
  3. Top 20 IT-BPO employers in India

Note:

  • Includes IT Services, Engg Services, Software Products and Offshore Product Development revenues
  • Ranking is based on companies that have submitted the detailed form. It does not include Mahindra Satyam whose revised audited revenues are not available
  • This list does not include some companies whose corporate headquarters are located outside India, but have significant India-centric delivery capabilities, and have not shared their India-centric revenue figures. Had they been ranked based on their India revenues, companies such as Accenture, Cognizant , HP and IBM and would have also appeared in this ranking.

Note:

  • This list does not include some companies whose corporate headquarters are located outside India, but have significant India-based delivery capabilities, and have not shared their India-based revenue figures. Had they been ranked based on their India revenues, companies such as Convergys and Sutherland Global Services would have also appeared in this list.
  • Since several companies are privately held, in order to maintain uniformity, revenue figures for the ranked companies are not being shared.

Note:

  • This list is based on the India-based headcount of firms with IT-BPO operations in India, as reported to NASSCOM in its annual survey. Based on publicly available information, few other MNC’s such as Accenture and IBM would have also featured in this list. However, as they have not participated in the survey, we do not have all the required details and are unable to rank them. Most companies on this list are engaged in IT as well as BPO.
  • Companies marked with an * indicate pure-play BPO firms.

Apologies if this is the incorrect area for this question.

I’ve noticed that as I copy data/install programs on my Laptop, the weight of the Laptop increases. I have a bad back and am medically limited on the amount of weight I can carry so I need to be very carefull not to inflict injury upon myself.

I have also noticed my XBox feels heavier as well (the more games I save or purchase from arcade). I generally don’t travel with my XBox so that is not an issue for me, but note the I am having the same results.

My ask, what is the weight/file ratio? So for example, how many GB’s = 6oz? I dread the day I need a dolly to commute to work with my Laptop.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi K_McLovin,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Answers Forum.

If we understand your question correctly, there is no possible way that copying files or installing programs is increasing the weight of your laptop. Also, the same with your Xbox, downloading games from the Arcade will not increase the weight of your Game Console.

Just to explain a little bit more as to why the hard drive will not “gain weight”; if you were to look inside a hard drive you would see what would resemble a record player. There are small platters that resemble the record then you have a read/write head attached to an arm. The platters are coated with tiny magnetic particles when the hard drive gets “written on” the read/write head simply alters the polarity of the millions of different little sections on different parts of the hard drive. So when you write on a hard drive you don’t really “Write” on it, you rearrange things on it, and because of that the weight doesn’t change.

If we are misunderstanding your question please clarify so that we may further assist you.

If you have very large files, you can compress them and then compress the compressed file etc. until the files are down to 1 byte. That should make you laptop lighter than when you bought it! I use this trick all the time so that I can save my entire music collection on a 5-1/4″ floppy (yeah, I found a use for them 🙂

    Dear friend:

Every Gigabyte counts as 5oz of extra weight for your computer. There has been cases (in computers with 1Tb of Hard drive and more) of people left eMule activated 3 days and when that people returned to the computer, there was a hole in the floor instead.

Maybe you should try a compression software (like 7zip for example) which help reducing the data’s weight.

Take care of those P2P software that quickly increase your data.Watch out and be careful.

Use MS-DOS to drastically reduce data weight.

    Greetings from Spain!

I am glad you brought this up actually.

I don’t think this is just a technology problem. The other day, I was reading one of those MS press books (One of the Thick ones) and towards the end of the book (after reading it for about three hours) I wanted to get up for a glass of water and use the toilet eventually.
But, here’s when a strange thing happened. As i was about to get up (I usually read in bed) my head was so heavy that I couldn’t get up. I roughly estimate the wheight increase ~564.32 grams.
Well, I attributed this phenomena to the amount of information that got stored in my brain during that time (Notice the similarity there ? )
I eventually fell asleep and when I woke up a few hours later to take the MS exam guess what?!? My head was light again, and I consequently failed the Exam as I couldn’t remember anything a read on that book.

Based on my experience, what I would suggest, is turn the laptop off, leave it like that for a few hours and then you can carry it around without risking to break your back. You might risk to loose your data but hey, your health is more important.

    I hope that helps

The weight gain is not in the Xbox & Laptop, it is in *you* from all that junk food you are pigging out on while playing way too many games for way too many hours on your Xbox & Laptop. 🙂

This is a rare error when the overwriting mechanism of the memory banks lead to an overflow of data because it cannot add on and thus super-stack, increasing the weight significantly. While normal weight/file ratio is approximately 0.02 oz/GB, in rare cases such as these, it can go as high as somewhere around 6 oz/GB.

One solution is going to the system32 folder (C:\WINDOWS\system32) and deleting certain unnecessary files, but too much tampering may cause permanent changes to your computer.

Actually the weight of your hard drive decreases after formatting it for the first time. On an unformatted hard drive the bits are spread in weird order all over the drive and there’s big chaos. This causes strong magnetic forces and there’s a constant push-pull between the bits. This consumes a lot of energy and according to a smart guy called Einstein energy has weight. When formatting the drive for the first time the bits are put in order and also stay in order when writing data to the disk thus the energy decreases and thus the weight actually decreases and doesn’t increase.

P.S. This is fully serious! Read: http://www.wdr.de/tv/wissen-macht-ah/archiv/kuriosah/computer.phtml. Unfortunately the site is in German but I’ve written the most important part above.

Dreading the day you Dolly your laptop???? Are you kidding me….. what does your laptop weigh 6 lbs. at the most?

That about half the weight of your McDonalds bag…

You better be carrying an Alienware laptop and not a netbook.

If you cannot carry your laptop thats the least of your worries, I’d be more concerned with how your dealing with yourself daily

You do know that your installing programs in a virtual perspective

It depends on the size of the gigabyte, if it’s a bigger gigabyte it will weigh more (like a normal bite of your Mcdonalds) …the bigger the byte the more energy (jiggawatts) it will consume and therefore weigh more. Using the formula w=g/j (weight = gigabytes/jiggawatts) you will see how much the weight will increase. Avoid .exe files as they are really heavy according to Christophé Toffy Brun in his 1908 memoirs…

Yes, we have to take that seriously.

If we don’t delete the programs that we don’t use, we can crash our backs, or even… who knows, transform our planet into a black hole.

    Esteemed lanuletta:

I’m afraid I have to disagree with you on this one. The fact is that the equation to which you refer (discovered in the XVIIII century, by Lineus Torvaldus) involves gigabytes AND giggawatts (as opposed to your “jiggawatts” which have been deprecated). The correct form is>
“weight of data equals gigabytes divided by giggawatts”
    or
    wD=g/g
Basic algebra shows that g/g=1, so
    wD=1
    Divide both sides by D…
    w(D/D) = 1/D
    thus eliminating (D/D) it renders.
    w = 1/D
Which reads: “The weight is the inverse of the Data”

This is the formal mathematical proof that the more data you store, the LESS the computer weights.
If anything, this person should put his hamburger ON TOP of the laptop, to act as a paperwieght.

    Forgot to explain:
The fact that the giggawat is spelled with a “g” is because it actually has the same latin root as gigabyte: “gi” and means “the highest one” as in “ginius” (the highest one in IQ).

The Top 500 Worst Passwords of All Time

March 29, 2009

From the moment people started using passwords, it didn’t take long to realize how many people picked the very same passwords over and over. Even the way people misspell words is consistent. In fact, people are so predictable that most hackers make use of lists of common passwords just like these. To give you some insight into how predictable humans are, the following is a list of the 500 most common passwords. If you see your password on this list, please change it immediately. Keep in mind that every password listed here has been used by at least hundreds if not thousands of other people.

There are some interesting passwords on this list that show how people try to be clever, but even human cleverness is predictable. For example, look at these passwords which are a little interesting:
  • ncc1701: The ship number for the Starship Enterprise
  • thx1138: The name of George Lucas’s first movie, a 1971 remake of an earlier student project
  • qazwsx: Follows a simple pattern when typed on a typical keyboard
  • 666666: Six sixes
  • 7777777: Seven sevens
  • ou812: The title of a 1988 Van Halen album
  • 8675309: The number mentioned in the 1982 Tommy Tutone song. The song supposedly caused an epidemic of people dialing 867- 5309 and asking for “Jenny”
Approximately one out of every nine people uses at least one password on the list shown in the table below!! And one out of every 50 people uses one of the top 20 worst passwords.
Here’s the list of top 500 worst passwords of all time, not considering character case:

Apple iPhone Nano Photos & Review

February 8, 2009

Chinese handsets have flooded the mobile phone markets with clones of all the famous brands and hot selling models/handsets. Out of these the latest handset which is getting into the top charts is the ‘iPhone Nano’ and we cannot expect this to be a product of Apple because there are no news from Apple about such a handset and this is clearly a clone which can be available for somewhere around 100USD.

Here are some photos which i had found on multiple websites which can give you a idea on the size of the handset. The original iPhone is a complete touch screen device and there are claims that this mini iphone would also have the same features but with a small size which can be easily handled by anyone especially women who look for mini devices than those bulky shaped ones. The most amazing thing is that because the official model is released, the clones are available in the market and their color silicon cases are also available.

H1-B visa on Rediff

February 7, 2009

http://inhome.rediff.com/money/2009/feb/06visa-h-1b-how-to-apply.htm

Applicants and employers who plan to avail of H-1B visas to the United States, which are subject to fixed quotas, for the fiscal year 2010, should begin preparations early.

The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will begin accepting H-1B visa petitions for the fiscal year 2010 from Wednesday, April 1, 2009.

The earliest that applicants can begin working on these visas in the US is October 1, 2009, which is the start of FY 2010. Last year, the quotas were exhausted within the first week of the filing season.

As part of the H-1B process, the employer is required to receive a certified Labor Condition Application (LCA) from the United States Department of Labor (DOL) before the H-1B petition can be filed with the USCIS. However, it is important to note that the processing time for the H-1B visas is likely to increase dramatically this year.

Currently, the LCA is produced and certified almost instantly upon electronic submission to the DOL’s web-based application centre. The new certification process for the LCA may possibly take seven or more days if the changes are introduced.

Earlier it was possible to expedite last minute requests for new employees, but this will be highly unlikely if the process is delayed, though there is no intimation of that as yet.

The H-1B quota

The USCIS grants 65,000 H-1B visas each year and since 2004 an additional 20,000 H-1B visas have been granted to individuals with Master’s or higher degrees obtained from the US. Out of the 65,000 visas, a special quota is reserved for Chile and Singapore nationals under free trade agreements between the US and those countries.

In recent years, the demand for H-1B visas has far exceeded the supply. For instance, in FY 2008, the USCIS reported that it received 133,000 petitions on April 2 and April 3. In 2007, April 1 fell on a Sunday. For the very first time, the USCIS conducted a computer-generated random selection of petitions filed on the first and second day of the filing period to select only a limited number of cases allocated under the H-1B cap.

The USCIS also announced that the Master’s cap for FY 2008 was reached on April 30, 2007 and petitions that were received on April 30, 2007 under the Master’s cap were also subject to a random selection process.

With regard to applications for FY 2009, the USCIS announced that it had received more than the number of H-1B petitions for both the 65,000 and 20,000 cap during the 5-day filing period. In addition to providing a 5-day window when the USCIS accepted applications, the USCIS also stipulated that if it received more than one H-1B petition on behalf of the same alien for the same position both the applications would be dismissed and the fees forfeited.

The numerical limitation of 65,000 does not apply to a non-immigrant who is sponsored for an H-1B visa by an institution of higher education and non-profit entity related to or affiliated with any such institution.

Nor would it apply to an H-1B visa petition that has been filed by a non-profit research organisation or a governmental research organisation.

The quota restrictions do not apply to J-1 physicians who have been sponsored for a J-1 waiver by a federal or state agency or to H-1B extension requests. The quotas for Singapore and Chile have never been reached to date.

The USCIS reportedly plans to issue a rule in the spring or summer of 2009 to streamline the H-1B paperwork required to participate in the fiscal year 2010 lottery.

The rule would propose a ‘pre-registration’ system with a shorter application required for the lottery, and the full H-1B petition required for lottery winners. However, that system will not be in place for this April’s H-1B rush.

The H-1B process

An employer who needs the temporary services of a foreign national must demonstrate that both the job requirements and the foreigner’s credentials or experience are ‘professional.’ Beneficiaries who have four-year Bachelor’s degrees, equivalent to the US Bachelor’s degrees, usually qualify as professionals.

Beneficiaries from India, where a Bachelor’s degree usually involves three years of college education, require an additional year of education or experience. Individuals with foreign qualifications must obtain credentials evaluations and/or translations if required.

The employer must also meet Department of Labor (DOL) requirements (described below) and file a petition with the USCIS for permission to employ the qualifying foreign national. If the employee is out of the country, he or she must also apply for the visa at a US Consulate abroad upon receiving approval of the petition from the USCIS.

The Labor Condition Application

Prior to filing the H-1B petition with the USCIS, the employer must certify to the DOL with respect to the foreign worker, that

(1) it will pay the higher of what it pays its own similar workers or what similar workers in the area are paid (whichever is higher);

(2) the working conditions of its US workers are not adversely affected;

(3) there is no strike/lockout at the worksite nor in the occupation for which a foreign professional is sought; and

(4) it has given notice to current employees that it is seeking to hire an H-1B professional.

The DOL certifies receipt and acceptance of the attestation in order to create a public record and the original signed copy of this should be filed with the petition. The employer must also post the labor condition application for 10 days and maintain a wage file that is open to the public.

There are special provisions that apply to H-1B dependent employers. Generally, US employers of 51 or more individuals whose workforce comprises 15 per cent or more H-1B workers are considered dependent employers.

Smaller employers are allowed a slightly higher ratio of H-1Bs to their total workforce. H-1B dependent employers must additionally attest that they will not displace a U.S. worker 90 days before and after filing the visa petition for a foreign worker.

Further, they must attest that they have taken good-faith steps to recruit in the US using industry-wide standards and that they have offered the position to any US worker who applies and is equally or better qualified than the H-1B worker.

Dependent employers who pay H-1B workers a salary of $60,000 or who employ a person with a Master’s degree are exempt from the additional H-1B dependant employer attestations.

Employers must follow through on attestations or they are in violation of law and could be required to pay wages, incur civil penalties and be debarred from the program. The DOL initiates investigations of employer practices through both a formal complaint and its own investigation processes.

Filing the petition with the USCIS

The employer must submit a request to the USCIS, proving that it has completed the Labor Condition Application process and demonstrating that both the employer and the foreign professional qualify for the visa category. The employer must submit a fee of $320.

In addition, all employers applying for H-1B visa petitions must pay the new $500 ‘fraud prevention’ fee for each petition seeking an initial grant of H-1B non-immigrant classification or those petitions seeking to change an employer within those classifications.

The $500 fee will not apply to amendment or extension petitions filed by the same employer. The employer may expedite the petition through premium processing, by paying an additional $1,000 filing fee whereby the USCIS will adjudicate the case within 15 days.

As of December 8, 2004, employers must also pay a supplementary fee of $1,500. If the employer has 25 or fewer full-time employees including any affiliates or subsidiaries must pay $750.

Some employers may be exempt from the training fee. Employers will also be exempt from the training fee if they are filing a second H-1B extension on behalf of the foreign national employee.

In the petition the employer must demonstrate

(1) the need for someone who is a professional,

(2) that the job requires a worker with at least a bachelor’s degree, and

(3) that the prospective employee has the required degree or an equivalency analysis for a foreign degree along with any other required qualifications.

H-1B visa application

If the professional is already in the US in another visa category or status, the professional can file petition with the USCIS for a change of status to H-1B.

The new status will be indicated on the person’s I-94, but is not a travel document. In order to travel and re-enter the US in H-1B status, a visa must be obtained at a US Embassy or Consulate abroad.

Once the petition is approved by the USCIS, if the professional is outside the US, he or she must apply to a US consulate for an H-1B visa.

The US consular officer adjudicates the application to determine the alien’s admissibility before granting the visa.

Conclusion

Although certain categories of workers are exempt from the H-1B cap, there is no doubt that the 65,000 H-1B visas available for most jobs in ‘speciality occupations’ will be used up by mid-summer. With that in mind, employers desiring to hire professional workers under the H-1B category would do well to file their petitions early, or risk being shut-out until April 1, 2010 when the quota reopens for FY 2011.

Despite the economic downturn it is expected that like every year, there will be a mad scramble for available H-1B visa numbers.
